Joel Shapiro (b. 1941, d. 2025) was an American sculptor known for abstract works that explore balance, movement, and the relationship between form and space. Emerging in the late 1960s, Shapiro developed a sculptural language built from geometric elements arranged to suggest bodily presence and motion without direct representation. While his early works aligned with Minimalist concerns through their reduced forms and materials, his later practice introduced increasingly dynamic configurations that challenge gravity and equilibrium.
Shapiro’s sculptures often appear precariously balanced, creating a sense of tension that draws attention to weight, orientation, and spatial interaction. Working primarily in bronze, wood, and aluminum, he produced works that engage architectural contexts as well as open public environments. His practice emphasized how abstract form can evoke physical experience through scale and placement.
Shapiro exhibited extensively in major international institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate, and the Centre Pompidou. His work remains influential in the development of contemporary abstraction and public sculpture.
