untitled (2016 – 2017) is a sculptural work by Joel Shapiro composed of cast bronze elements arranged in an abstract configuration that suggests bodily movement without direct representation. The sculpture reflects the artist’s long-standing interest in balance, gesture, and psychological presence, using reduced geometric forms to explore how motion can be conveyed through structure and spatial relationship rather than figuration.
Shapiro’s practice often challenges the distinction between abstraction and the human body, proposing that form alone can carry emotional reference. In untitled, the angular components appear to tilt, extend, or pause, creating a sense of instability and rhythm. As viewers move around the work, its composition shifts, offering multiple readings of orientation and movement. The sculpture does not present a fixed image, but an experience shaped by perception and physical proximity.
Installed in the main plaza in front of the stc Metro Station in Olaya, designed by Gerber Architekten, untitled engages with an active public setting defined by pedestrian circulation and contemporary architecture. In this context, the work emphasizes movement as a shared condition between sculpture, viewer, and urban space.
