Relationships

Relationships (2021) by Rajaa Alshafae is a granite sculpture that examines how human presence gives meaning to space. The work suggests that places become significant through the memories, actions and connections formed within them. Its title extends beyond relationships between people to include the bond between individuals and the environments they inhabit.
Carved from granite, the sculpture rises as two connected forms arranged around an open central passage. Smooth curves and surfaces turned inward create a sense of exchange, while the void allows light and the surrounding landscape to enter the composition. From different viewpoints, the balance between separation and connection shifts, reinforcing the idea of relationship as dynamic.
Installed within the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, Relationships introduces a reflection on how memory and presence transform place. The work connects personal experience with public space, inviting consideration of how repeated encounters allow a location to acquire emotional and poetic significance.
