Reef is a large-scale stainless steel sculpture (400x300x250 cm) that serves as a metaphor for sanctuary and biodiversity. The form is derived from the conceptual “melting together” of a ship and a leaf, representing the backbone of both technology and nature. The artist draws specific inspiration from a sunken ship discovered in Jeddah (1907) that held clues to water purification, using this historical fragment to bridge themes of existence, destruction, and cyclicity. Reef parallels the function of underwater coral reefs—hidden ecosystems that host incredible biodiversity—with the human search for a safe haven or “reef” in a migratory world. The linear traces of the steel create a skeletal yet protective structure. It is a work intended to leave a “positive trace” on the planet, symbolizing the resilience of life and the hope for a harmonious future ecosystem.
