Ugo Rondinone (b. 1964) is a Swiss-born, New York–based artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation, painting, photography, and public art. Since the 1990s, he has developed a body of work that draws on elemental forms, natural phenomena, and archetypal shapes to examine how perception shifts through color, scale, material, and environment. His sculptures often employ simplified geometric or symbolic motifs that encourage direct and contemplative viewing, inviting audiences to experience form through light, shadow, and spatial orientation rather than narrative content.
Rondinone’s work has been presented in major international museums and public contexts, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the New Museum in New York, and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. He has also produced numerous large-scale outdoor installations that integrate natural cycles and environmental conditions as central components of the artwork. Throughout his career, he has explored the relationship between the built environment, the natural world, and human perception, contributing significantly to contemporary discourse on minimal and symbolic form. He continues to live and work in New York.
