the sun (2022) is part of Ugo Rondinone’s ongoing exploration of elemental forms and their ability to shape perception through scale, geometry, and direct visual engagement. The sculpture presents a large circular motif with radiating extensions, transforming a widely recognized symbol into a spatial structure that interacts with shifting light and movement. Rondinone often uses archetypal forms to examine how simple shapes can evoke shared cultural associations while remaining grounded in immediate visual experience.

The artwork reflects the artist’s interest in natural cycles and the relationship between observation, rhythm, and time. Through its open circular center and outward lines, the sun suggests ideas of renewal and continuity while maintaining a precise material presence. Installed within a shallow water feature near the entrance of the National Museum in the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, the sculpture incorporates the reflective qualities of water as part of its visual effect, intensifying changes in color, shadow, and atmosphere throughout the day.
