Robert Indiana (b. 1928, d. 2018) was an American artist associated with Pop Art whose work explored the visual and cultural power of language, typographic form, and American identity. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and the Edinburgh College of Art, Indiana settled in New York, where he became linked to the group of artists working at Coenties Slip in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His practice integrated elements of sign painting, commercial graphics, and bold color to create works that examined how words and numbers operate as symbols within public and cultural life.
Indiana achieved wide recognition with his LOVE image, first created in the 1960s, which became central to his investigations of verbal form and conceptual clarity. Throughout his career he produced sculptures, paintings, and prints that addressed themes of identity, history, and social commentary. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major museum collections worldwide. Indiana spent the latter part of his life working on Vinalhaven Island, Maine.
