LOVE (Red Outside, Blue Inside) (1966 – 1998) is one of Robert Indiana’s most recognized sculptural works and reflects the artist’s ongoing exploration of language, typography, and the visual impact of concise verbal forms. The artwork is based on Indiana’s original two-dimensional composition created in the 1960s, which introduced the now-iconic arrangement of the letters “L” and “O” stacked above “V” and “E.” Rendered as a three-dimensional structure, the sculpture transforms a familiar word into a physical object that examines how language occupies space and acquires new meaning through scale, color, and context.
Indiana developed LOVE as part of a broader investigation into American identity, popular culture, and the communicative power of simple text. The tilted “O” introduces a sense of movement that disrupts the symmetry of the composition, prompting viewers to reconsider a word often encountered as an abstract concept.
Installed in the Arrival Plaza of the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), within walking distance of the KAFD Metro Station, LOVE (Red Outside, Blue Inside) engages directly with pedestrian circulation and contemporary architecture. In this setting, the sculpture extends Indiana’s interest in the relationship between language and public space, inviting viewers to reflect on how words shape collective experience.
