Nagi Farid Tadrous (b. 1964) is an Egyptian sculptor who has been working for more than thirty-five years, and whose practice is defined by an interest in the antigravitational: in sculptural forms that appear to resist the weight of the material from which they are made. To this end he frequently combines stone with stainless steel, using the reflective surface of the metal to capture sunlight and to generate a visual energy that offsets the mass beneath it, and constructing compositions in which solid form and emptiness coexist in harmony rather than opposition. Tadrous participated in the Biennale di Venezia in 2005, a significant international platform for his work, and has taken part in over twenty-five international symposiums since 1989. The symposium format has been central to the development of his monumental sculpture, allowing him to work at architectural scale and in dialogue with site. His work has been shown in more than fifty exhibitions in Egypt, where he remains a significant figure in contemporary sculpture, and his monumental works are installed in public settings internationally.
