In the Sunlight (2020) by Nagi Farid Tadrous is a marble and stainless steel sculpture that examines sunlight as an active part of the work. The sculpture brings together materials with contrasting qualities, allowing carved stone and reflective metal to respond differently to the same source of light. Its title directs attention to this changing relationship and to the way natural conditions shape perception.
The marble gives the work weight and permanence, while the stainless steel catches and redirects light. As the sun moves, reflections, shadows and areas of emphasis shift across the sculpture. These changes alter the relationship between its surfaces and encourage observation from different viewpoints throughout the day.
Installed within the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, In the Sunlight connects the enduring presence of stone with Riyadh’s intense natural light. The sculpture turns sunlight into a changing visual element, creating a dialogue between material, environment and perception.
