Anish Kapoor (b. 1954) is one of the most influential sculptors working today, known for a practice that examines materiality, perception, and spatial experience. Since the late 1970s, he has developed sculptural forms that range from highly polished reflective surfaces to large-scale pigment works and complex engineered structures. His interest in voids, concave and convex geometries, and the interplay between presence and absence has shaped a body of work that challenges how viewers experience form and space.
Kapoor’s early explorations in the 1980s included geometric forms saturated with pure pigment, while later works introduced reflective stainless steel surfaces that expand or invert the surrounding environment. His investigations also extend to wax, stone, PVC, and other materials that shift between solidity and transformation. Kapoor has exhibited extensively in major museums and public spaces worldwide, and his work continues to influence contemporary discourse on sculpture and perception. He lives and works in the United Kingdom.
