Sky Mirror, Blue

Sky Mirror, Blue (2016) reflects Anish Kapoor’s continuing investigation into perception, reflection, and the transformation of visual experience. The stainless-steel sculpture features a concave surface coated in blue, capturing and inverting the surrounding environment within a defined plane. This manipulation of orientation and depth generates a shifting image in which the sky and landscape appear displaced, encouraging viewers to reconsider their position in relation to the work and their spatial environment.

Kapoor developed mirrored works after his explorations of void sculptures, seeking to understand whether reflection could create its own sense of interior space. The concave form functions as a concentrated field of visual distortion, where the boundary between physical object and reflected image becomes uncertain, emphasizing perception over material substance.

Installed within a landscaped area of Al Kindi Plaza in the Diplomatic Quarter of Riyadh, near a small water feature, Sky Mirror, Blue is framed by shaded walkways, planted areas, and buildings that draw on traditional Saudi architectural forms with rendered facades and stone and marble finishes. In this setting, the polished surface introduces a precise, industrial material that contrasts with the textured architecture and surrounding desert-influenced landscape, integrating changing light, weather, and movement into its shifting reflection.
