The Little and the Huge (2020) by Ali Jabbar is a black and white marble sculpture that examines the relationship between scale and perception. The title places the small and the monumental in direct relation, suggesting that size is understood comparatively. By bringing opposing measures together, the work considers how one form can alter the way another is perceived.
Carved from contrasting marble, the sculpture uses differences in tone, proportion and mass to create a unified composition. The material’s weight and permanence give physical presence to unequal scales, while changes in viewpoint shift the balance between its elements. Light and shadow further emphasize contrast, allowing what appears dominant or secondary to change through observation.
Installed within the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, The Little and the Huge introduces a reflection on coexistence and interdependence. The sculpture suggests that the small and the vast gain meaning through their relationship to one another.
