“Japanese artist Shiro Takatani, Co-founder and Artistic Director of Japanese legendary collective Dumb Type, choreographs a symphony of animated water and light with ST\LL for the 3D WATER MATRIX (2014). In front of the 3D WATER MATRIX, visitors experience the creation process of liquid artworks: 900 computer-programmed electromagnetic valves form a square grid of 900 streams of water. The result is an image or pattern display, with a very low resolution (30×30 pixels) but a display to which gravity gives a third dimension, making it a real 3D animated light sculpture. With ST\LL, Shiro Takatani plays with the limit of the perception of the human eyes through a synchronisation between the valves and the underwater strobes to slow down, stop or even reverse gravity, creating a choreographed animation of droplets, a moving and vibrating architecture of water and light.”
