Essence of the Earth

Essence of the Earth reclaims the primal memory of matter through the medium of steel rebar. The sculpture takes the form of a dense cube composed of hundreds of metal columns tightly bound with steel ties, avoiding welding to emphasize cohesion through connection. Conceptually, it draws a parallel between Noah’s Ark and modern desalination: both are viewed as vessels of salvation that transform a threat (flood/salinity) into life. The industrial aesthetic of the iron lines mimics the internal structure of a desalination plant—its parallel systems and filtration layers. However, the work transcends utility to become a spiritual metaphor for society and resilience. The iron is treated not as construction material but as a witness to geological time, having “descended” into the earth. The act of binding represents a collective survival, suggesting that redemption is found in the solidity of holding together against the forces of annihilation.
