Dawn and Dusk

Dawn and Dusk presents two monumental lions assembled from roughly hewn granite blocks, evoking the blunt directness of megalithic structures. This primitive figuration provides a deliberate counterpoint to the engineered sophistication of Riyadh’s contemporary infrastructure, measuring progress against its origins. The sculptures function as archetypal guardians and solar symbols: one possesses a mane of pink stone symbolizing the sunrise (Dawn), while the other features yellow stone for the sunset (Dusk). Their bodies and tails are carved from darker green granite, visually anchoring them to the ground. By reducing these majestic forms to their essential components, the artwork highlights the raw material process—leaving traces of creation inscribed in the stone. It draws a parallel to the history of desalination, where simple substances are transformed into sustenance. Dawn and Dusk bridges the gap between the ancient past, where matter and meaning first converged, and a future that is still being formed, positioning stone and sun as the eternal foundations of life.
