constrained surface (2015) experiments with synaesthesia, a core part of Ryoichi Kurokawa’s art. Synaesthesia, in medical terms, refers to a condition where a sensation in one sense triggers a sensation in another. Within an artistic context, the term defines the merging of sensory experiences, where one input (such as sound) cannot be described without referring to another (touch, sight, or smell).
constrained surface explores this synaesthetic experience through the unison of light, color, sound, and movement, inviting visitors to discover the surprising possibilities of perception within the boundaries of a frame. By playing with the confines of a screen much like a painter plays with the limits of a canvas, the work demonstrates how digital tools can articulate an experience where technology enhances, rather than overshadows, expression—creating moments of surprise and wonder.
