Žilvinas Balkevičius creates sculptures that act as bridges between the inner self and the natural world. Having moved to Iceland, the “land of fire and ice,” his work is heavily inspired by elemental forces. He combines materials such as granite and stainless steel to create contrasts between stability and fluidity, permanence and ephemerality. His artistic philosophy is grounded in phenomenology and existentialism, referencing Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger to explore how objects manifest in consciousness. Balkevičius views art as a tool for self-discovery and a medium to express the interdependence of living beings. His sculptures often feature polished spheres interacting with rough stone, symbolizing water and life. By suspending preconceived assumptions, he invites viewers to experience the essence of the material and the moment, aligning with themes of ecological harmony and human existence.
