Renato Brunello (b. 1953) is an Italian sculptor whose long career has been divided between Europe and South America. Born in Italy, he studied at the Venice School of Art and received several awards in his own country before moving to Brazil in 1975, where he established himself as a major sculptor and where much of his mature work has been produced. His practice is built on the balance of opposites, a principle he treats not as a formal device alone but as an argument: that equilibrium between the world’s diversities can promote the union of cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Working principally in stone, and often in contrasting black and white marble, he sets opposing materials and volumes against one another so that neither prevails and the composition depends on both. His works can be found in a wide range of contexts, including public spaces, museums, banks, cultural entities, public and private companies, and private art collections, and he has contributed to sculpture symposiums internationally.
