Maryam Turkey’s art is deeply informed by her dual experience of witnessing the destruction of heritage in Baghdad and the mundane construction of the United States. Based in New York, she bridges art and design through a practice that is both architectural and sculptural. She works with a unique mixture of clay, paper, and pigments, combined with industrial materials like metal and light, to build “metropolises” that reference displacement and memory. Turkey’s work engages with the ethics of building and the contrast between hand-built structures and modern infrastructure. Recognized as “one to watch” by Architectural Digest, she has received prestigious fellowships including the Silver Arts Residency and the Socrates Annual Fellowship.
