Janey Waney (1969) is a large-scale stabile by Alexander Calder that exemplifies the artist’s exploration of balance, movement, and spatial composition through abstract form. Constructed from painted steel plates joined by bolts, the sculpture is defined by its bold color, open structure, and carefully calibrated equilibrium. Unlike Calder’s mobiles, which rely on motion, his stabiles achieve a sense of dynamism through fixed elements that suggest movement while remaining firmly grounded.
Calder developed works such as Janey Waney through an intuitive yet precise process, allowing form, weight, and proportion to determine the final configuration. The sculpture’s intersecting planes and sweeping curves create shifting visual relationships as viewers move around it, emphasizing the role of perception in experiencing sculptural space.
Installed in one of the plazas within the King Abdullah Financial District, Janey Waney occupies an open public setting shaped by pedestrian circulation and contemporary architecture. In this context, the sculpture engages directly with its surroundings, encouraging viewers to experience form, scale, and balance through movement within the urban environment.
