Giuseppe Penone (b. 1947) is an Italian artist associated with the Arte Povera movement, known for a practice that examines the relationship between nature, material, and human presence. Emerging in the late 1960s, his work focuses on processes of growth, transformation, and the passage of time, often using materials such as wood, stone, bronze, and earth. Penone’s sculptures and installations investigate how natural forces shape form and how traces of contact and pressure can reveal the interconnectedness of living systems.
Throughout his career, Penone has produced works that engage directly with landscapes and natural environments, translating organic processes into sculptural language. His work has been exhibited extensively in major international institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tate Modern in London, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Venice Biennale, where he has participated on multiple occasions. Penone’s practice continues to contribute significantly to contemporary discussions on ecology, materiality, and the role of sculpture in public and natural spaces.
