Diamond (Red) (1994 – 2005) is a sculptural work by Jeff Koons that reinterprets the form of a faceted gemstone through a contemporary, man-made object. Produced as part of the artist’s Celebration series, the artwork translates the geometry of a diamond into a mirror-polished stainless steel structure coated with a transparent red finish. Composed of fifty-two precisely defined facets, the sculpture reflects light and its surroundings across its highly refined surface, emphasizing perception and visual experience rather than optical depth.
Koons frequently revisits symbols associated with value, desire, and celebration, examining how idealized forms are constructed through scale, surface, and material. In Diamond (Red), the artist presents a synthetic interpretation of a natural formation that typically requires extensive geological time to develop, highlighting the contrast between natural processes and industrial fabrication. The red coloration references rarity and perceived value, while the reflective surface incorporates the surrounding environment and the presence of viewers into the work.
Installed in front of the Cultural Palace in the Diplomatic Quarter of Riyadh, Diamond (Red) engages directly with the architecture and open plaza of a major cultural site. In this setting, the sculpture functions as both a visual focal point and a reflective surface that connects object, environment, and viewer within the public realm.
