Desert Lines (2021) by Haidar Alawi Al-Alawi is a granite sculpture inspired by the patterns and formations that shape the desert landscape. Through a composition of flowing lines and carefully carved surfaces, the work translates the rhythms created by wind, water, and geological time into an abstract sculptural language. Rather than depicting the landscape directly, the sculpture captures its underlying processes, revealing how natural forces continuously shape the environment.
Carved from granite, the work draws on the permanence of stone to express forms that originate in movement and gradual transformation. Variations in light and shadow across its surfaces change throughout the day, encouraging viewers to experience the sculpture from multiple perspectives and reinforcing the relationship between material, landscape, and time.
Installed within the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, Desert Lines contributes to a cultural landscape where art and public space intersect. In this setting, the sculpture establishes a connection between Riyadh’s urban environment and the geological character of the surrounding desert.
