Connection

Connection (2023) by Bertha Shortiss is a granite sculpture that explores relationships through the interaction of form, material, and space. Its abstract composition brings together distinct sculptural elements that appear both independent and interconnected, suggesting that meaning is created through the relationships established between individual parts rather than through isolated forms.
Carved from granite, the sculpture draws on the strength and permanence of stone while introducing a sense of rhythm and continuity through its carefully balanced composition. The spaces between the sculptural elements are as significant as the forms themselves, encouraging viewers to move around the work and experience changing perspectives as connections emerge and dissolve.
Installed within the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, Connection contributes to a cultural landscape where art, architecture, and public space converge. In this setting, the sculpture reinforces the role of public art in creating places of encounter, encouraging reflection on the connections between people, landscape, and the shared urban environment.
