Architectural Abstraction (2024) by Ahmed Karaly is a granite sculpture that reinterprets muqarnas, an architectural technique closely associated with Islamic architecture. The work translates its layered dimensions into an independent sculptural form, connecting an established architectural language with contemporary ideas of design and construction. Its title reflects this movement from functional ornament toward abstraction.
Carved from granite, the sculpture is organized through stacked rectangular masses, stepped recesses and an arched opening. Alternating projections and voids create depth across the composition, while light and shadow clarify its shifting planes. The solid structure recalls a fragment of a building, yet its openings prevent the form from appearing closed or static.
Installed at Science Park, Architectural Abstraction introduces a reflection on how architectural heritage can inform modernity. The work does not reproduce a historic structure, but reformulates familiar principles of Islamic architecture as a contemporary vision shaped through mass, proportion and space.
